Sponsored by ARCS-OC and the UCI Astronomy Club, Dr. Jack Lubin (ARCS-OC Scholar 2022-2023) will guide attendees on a stargazing trip to Newport Beach.
When: July 23, 2023 8:30-10:30pm
Where: Inspiration Point, 3001 Ocean Blvd, Corona Del Mar, CA 92625 (Tentative)
Parking: Free street parking is available. Minimal walking is required.
Cost: Free for ARCS members, $15 for guests
The moon will be in the waxing crescent phase, which is the second best phase (next to the new moon) for stargazing. Mars, Venus, and Regulus will be in the Western sky just after sunset. There will be three telescopes of various magnifications available, which will enable us to view several celestial bodies simultaneously. In addition to viewing the nightsky, we will hear Dr. Lubin's award-winning research talk. Alternative programming will be prepared in case cloud cover is uncooperative.
Additional information and formal agenda will be posted here closer to the event date.

Dr. Jack Lubin is a newly minted Ph.D. from the UCI Astronomy department. His thesis focused on studying exoplanets primarily through the Radial Velocity detection method. This allows him to disentangle true planetary signals from stellar activity induced signals. Beyond research, he is a co-leader of UCI's Physics and Astronomy Community Excellence (PACE) program. He was also a finalist at the 2023 UCI Grand Slam. When outside the office, he enjoys hitting balls on the driving range and reading (and trying to write!) sci-fi short stories. This Fall, Dr. Lubin will join UCLA's Astronomy Department as a post-doctoral fellow to continue his research.
